Pengantar

Sivitas akademika Universitas Hasanuddin selama ini terlibat untuk mendorong berbagai upaya perdamaian dan rekonsiliasi serta penguatan demokrasi. Universitas Hasanuddin sangat beruntung memiliki dua tokoh inspiratif perdamaian dunia yang aktif dalam promosi perdamaian, mengurai pertikaian dan meneguhkan kelembagaan demokrasi untuk menjaga bangunan perdamaian yang berkelanjutan. Tokoh inspirasi pertama adalah Nelson Mandela yang dikenal sebagai pejuang anti-apartheid yang selanjutnya terpilih sebagai Presiden Afrika Selatan. Nelson Mandela yang juga peraih Nobel Perdamaian tahun 1998 ini mendapat Doctor Honoris Causa dari Universitas Hasanuddin pada tanggal 10 Agustus 2005. Tokoh kedua adalah Muhammad Jusuf Kalla yang merupakan pelopor perdamaian konflik di Indonesia, khususnya di Aceh, Ambon dan Poso. M Jusuf Kalla saat ini bekerja untuk mendorong perdamaian di Afganistan. M Jusuf Kalla adalah alumni Fakultas Ekonomi Universitas Hasanuddin dan mantan Wakil Presiden Republik Indonesia yang ke-10 dan ke-12. Berangkat spirit para tokoh perdamaian tersebut, Pusat Penelitian Perdamaian, Konflik dan Demokrasi (Center for Peace, Conflict and Democracy) didirikan untuk menjadi merupakan pusat penelitian dan pengembangan serta pendidikan dalam rangka menguatkan visi perdamaian yang berkelanjutan dengan nilai demokrasi dan Keadilan social.
